Driesell Testifies in Investigation of Bias’ Death

Share

Lefty Driesell, Maryland basketball coach, testified Wednesday before the grand jury in Upper Marlboro, Md., investigating the cocaine-induced death of his star player, Len Bias. The grand jury then retired for the week. It was not known whether Driesell waived the immunity that would normally be included in testimony before a Maryland grand jury investigating a drug case.

Arthur Marshall, Prince George’s County state’s attorney, has said investigators were told that Driesell directed players to remove evidence of drugs from Bias’ College Park, Md., dormitory room in the hours after his collapse June 19. Marshall has said if that is indicated to the grand jury, Driesell could face indictment on obstruction of justice charges.

Bias’ teammates, David Gregg, 19, and Terry Long, 22, have been charged with possession of cocaine and obstruction for allegedly “sanitizing” the dormitory room they shared with the All-American forward, who was a first-round draft choice of the National Basketball Assn.’s Boston Celtics.
