The mayor of a town in northern Mexico and two other people have asked for political asylum in the United States, a U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service official in El Paso said. He said that Mayor Gustavo Villareal, of Hidalgo del Parral, a member of the opposition National Action Party, and the other two men indicated they were seeking asylum because they had taken part in opposition demonstrations against alleged fraud in the July 6 elections in the state of Chihuahua.
