A drive to raise $24 million for a memorial to honor the seven crew members of the shuttle Challenger and three Apollo astronauts killed in a launch pad fire in 1967 was launched at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Rep. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), who flew aboard the shuttle Columbia last January, spoke to about 200 guests at Spaceport USA, the future site of the memorial, to officially start the fund-raising effort. Organizers hope to complete the memorial by Jan. 28, 1989, the third anniversary of the Challenger disaster.
