‘Ignorant’ People Who Visit L.A. Art Museums

Share

In response to your letter from the irate Northern Californian suggesting we educate our museum-going public, may I say, that’s just what we’re doing. The “cultural Philistine” who knew nothing more about Van Gogh than his ear problems was exactly where he belonged--in a museum, learning. What’s more, he might even get to like it and come back again.

Our San Francisco elitist may see huge crowds as offensive. We see them as a sign of vitality and growth. Besides, the overflow from changing exhibitions show up in our permanent collection where they can continue to educate and enjoy themselves. I know, because as a longstanding member of the LACMA Docent council, I am privileged to help in the process.
