Congress’ New Tax Overhaul

Amidst the largely positive speculation and conjecture concerning the effects of pending tax-reform legislation, one lingering doubt prevents me from rejoicing in what appears to be progressive and vitally needed changes in tax law: Ronald Reagan supports it.

The President’s appalling record in economic matters and his manifest disdain for government that does not adhere to his simplistic 1920s political philosophy must necessarily cause concern about tax-reform merely because he favors it.

One has only to look upon our astronomical foreign trade imbalance, runaway budget deficits and substitution of obstinacy and charm for sound policy when dealing with Congress in fiscal matters to cringe in fear for any economic measure supported by this Administration.

There must be a catch in the new tax law, else why the support from the Great Obfuscator?

But, maybe there is no catch, after all. If that’s true, Reagan must be watched even more closely for he is being untrue to his real self. The man confuses me, which means I am becoming more like him. That’s frightening.
