The Navy announced it has signed a $22.7-million contract with Israel for use of 13 Kfir jet fighters. The four-year contract, signed by the Naval Air Systems Command and Israel Aircraft Industries, Ltd., will be paid for the refurbishment of 13 Kfirs and establishment of “an on-site support center” at the Marine Corps Air Station, Yuma, Ariz. The Israeli jets will be used to establish a new adversary squadron for the Marine Corps. Such squadrons are manned by pilots who are schooled in Soviet tactics and who fly simulated combat missions against pilots undergoing fighter training.
