Marcos Loyalist Jailed in Murder
A 26-year-old supporter of deposed Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos was arrested Monday on charges of murdering a Marcos loyalist outside the Hilton Hotel in Manila last Tuesday.
Fernando Diaz, chairman of a group supporting Marcos, was detained after a witness identified him as the man who shot Felizardo Lota, a former government prosecutor and prominent figure at pro-Marcos rallies, police said.
Diaz and former movie actor Carlos Salazar, who had been sought by police since the murder, surrendered to Defense Minister Juan Ponce Enrile and were turned over to police.
Witnesses said they saw Salazar running from the scene of the shooting, but police said he was freed because there was no solid evidence linking him to the murder.
