Uganda has closed its border with Sudan because of Khartoum’s alleged support of anti-government rebels operating in northern Uganda, a government official in Kampala announced. The border was closed several days after about 400 rebels loyal to ousted Ugandan leader Gen. Tito Okello attacked the northern town of Gulu, Minister of State for Internal Affairs Kiiza Besigye said. The Ugandan move blocked the only route that had remained open for Western food aid to southern Sudan, where an estimated 2 million people face starvation. Khartoum has denied that it backs the rebels.
