U.S. OPEN TENNIS TOURNAMENT : Roundup : Shriver and Lloyd Advance With Easy Victories

Fifth-seeded Pam Shriver needed just 41 minutes Wednesday to dispose of Terry Holladay, 6-1, 6-0, in an opening-round match of the U.S. Open.

Shriver joked about the speed of the match, saying, “I think at the Open it is the quickest match I can ever remember. Very few matches that are quick like this do you have a clock (on the court) staring you in the face.

“Actually, I was trying to finish under 40 (minutes). I got down, 15-40, on the last service game and blew it.”

Shriver connected on 71% of her first serves and never double-faulted against Holladay, of Del Mar, Calif., who is ranked No. 97 in the world.

Second-seeded Chris Evert Lloyd had no problems against Barbara Gerken, posting a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

Lloyd, 31, a six-time champion, registered a record 84th Open victory.

“I feel great,” she said following her 57-minute workout. “I’m in a good frame of mind. I haven’t overplayed to this point. I feel very fresh at this stage of the year. I’m real optimistic. My knee (tendinitis) feels good, and I think everything is falling into place nicely.”

Lloyd, guilty of an uncharacteristic number of double faults when her right knee bothered her recently, served only three against Gerken. She broke Gerken’s service six times.

“In the first-round match you’re always a little nervous,” said Lloyd, whose last U.S. Open title came in 1982. “You just sort of want to play it and get it over with.”

In other women’s matches involving seeded players, No. 3 Steffi Graf of West Germany defeated Susan Mascarin, 6-0, 6-1; No. 6 Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany eliminated Christine Jolissaint of Switzerland, 7-6, 6-3; No. 7 Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia downed Switzerland’s Lilian Drescher, 6-3, 6-2; No. 9 Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria defeated Candy Reynolds, 6-2, 6-4; No. 11 Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina ousted Natalie Tauziat of France, 6-3, 6-2; No. 12 Zina Garrison downed JoAnne Russell, 6-3, 6-3; No. 13 Stephanie Rehe ousted Sharon Walsh-Pete, 6-0, 6-3, and No. 14 Catarina Lindqvist of Sweden beat Debbie Spence, 6-1, 6-2.

Among men’s seeded players, third-seeded seeded Boris Becker of West Germany knocked off Glenn Michibata of Canada, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, and No. 6 Jimmy Connors, at 33 a five-time Open champion and a favorite with New York crowds, crushed Henrik Sundstrom of Sweden, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.
