With Left-Handed Mattingly Playing Third, Yankees Rally for a 13-12 Win

Juan Espino doubled home the tie-breaking run with two out in the ninth inning Friday night as the New York Yankees, with left-handed-throwing Don Mattingly playing third base, rallied for a 13-12 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

Mattingly, who handled six chances at third without an error, moved from first base after a series of pinch-hitters removed shortstop Mike Fischlin and sent third baseman Wayne Tolleson to shortstop. A hamstring injury to Mike Pagliarulo has left the Yankees weak at third.

The Yankees took a 5-0 lead but fell behind, 12-5, when Seattle rapped out a club-record nine hits in the second inning, shelling Ron Guidry into the earliest departure of his 10-year career. Eventually, the Yankees tied it, 12-12, when Dan Pasqua led off the seventh inning with his 13th homer of the season.

In the ninth, Dave Winfield singled. One out later, Pasqua walked, and Espino doubled to left-center, scoring Winfield and giving the victory to Tim Stoddard (3-0), who went five innings and allowed one hit. Dave Righetti pitched the ninth to record his major league-leading 32nd save.
