A 40-year-old man, stabbed repeatedly in the chest during a fight, was in critical condition Sunday at UCI Medical Center, authorities said.

Two men were booked on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the stabbing of Rogelio Mendez shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday, Police Lt. Chet Barry said Sunday.

Mauricio Resendiz, 18, of Anaheim was being held in the jail ward at UCI Medical Center, where he was in guarded condition with several stab wounds, Barry said. Daniel Mendoza, 23, of Anaheim was being held in City Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.

Barry said police, responding to a report of a fight in the 500 block of North East Street, found Mendez seriously wounded and lying in the street. Paramedics transported him to the hospital.

An unidentified employee of the city’s Utilities Department, who had witnessed the street fight, chased and captured the fleeing suspects and turned them over to arriving police, Barry said.

The reason for the fight was not immediately known, he said.
