A 23-year-old Encinitas man died shortly before dawn Monday after the truck in which he was riding ran off a road in San Marcos and overturned, the San Diego County coroner’s office said.
The man, identified as Timothy Ray Mercado, was pronounced dead shortly after 4 a.m. at the scene of the accident on Questhaven Road one quarter mile east of Elfin Forest Road.
Also in the truck at the time of the crash was Adalberto Castro, 19, of Encinitas, who was not seriously injured, according to a coroner’s spokesman. The accident occurred at about 3:15 a.m. when Mercado’s pickup truck ran off the road and down an embankment, according to Deputy Coroner Robert Engel. Mercado was pinned beneath the truck. A coroner’s spokesman said it was unclear who was driving the truck when it crashed.
