Chevron Suit
Hurray for the U.S. Justice Department and the Environmental Protection Agency for their suit against Chevron U.S.A. for dumping waste into Santa Monica Bay. And thanks to Assemblyman Tom Hayden (D-Santa Monica) and the Sierra Club for their work in this matter.
It is a terrifying thing to many of us average citizens that polluting our environment has become such a common thing and most of all, that the mind-set has become so accepting. Psychologically, it’s amazing what repetition of a previously unacceptable act can do to humans. The act becomes acceptable and only the degree to which it is committed is an issue. Why is anything being dumped into the ocean anyway? Perhaps (just maybe) during World War II the dangers of pollution were not known, but that time and that naivete are all long gone.
We need a strong economy and I have no wish to see Chevron or any other company “go under,” but what greed does to the conscience is unnerving.
