An auto safety group asked the government to order the recall and free repair of 6 million 1980-84 cars from General Motors Corp. for alleged power steering problems. The private Center for Auto Safety asked the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to investigate safety problems caused by the potential sudden loss of power steering in front-wheel-drive A, J and X-body cars. The request was based on 1,500 complaints involving at least 20 accidents and seven injuries, the group said. It also asked the Federal Trade Commission to order GM to notify owners that free repairs are available.
