Pendleton Leaves Iowa, Enrolls at USC, Must Sit Out One Year

Anthony Pendleton, one of the nation’s top prep basketball players last year while at Northwestern High in Flint, Mich., has enrolled at USC, the school announced Tuesday.

Pendleton, a 6-foot 4-inch guard, is ineligible for the 1986-87 season because he failed to meet the requirements of the NCAA’s Proposition 48, the school said. He must sit out his freshman year and then will have three years of eligibility with no option to redshirt.

Pendleton was released from the letter of intent he signed with Iowa last November, giving him the opportunity to enroll at USC. George Raveling, the head coach at Iowa when Pendleton signed the letter of intent, is now the USC coach.

Pendleton averaged 22 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists while leading Northwestern to the Michigan state semifinals. Northwestern won the state title during Pendleton’s sophomore and junior years.
