Walnut : Coyote Trapping to Begin
The Walnut City Council has approved a contract of up to $3,000 with the county Agriculture Commission to trap coyotes, which recently have become a problem in this rural community.
City Manager Linda Holmes said that several residents have reported over the past two months that household pets have been killed or attacked by coyotes.
Holmes said that county workers will set leg-hold traps in unpopulated areas. The trap areas will be posted with warnings against allowing dogs or children nearby. When a coyote is caught, it will be tested for such diseases as bubonic plague and then killed.
Holmes said the county has reported an increasing problem with coyotes, which can survive in both the wilderness and in suburban areas, where they forage for food in garbage cans.
