Maywood : Ex-Mayor Canning Dies

Funeral services for Milan Canning, the former mayor of Maywood, will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the Hillside Chapel at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier. Canning died of a heart attack Monday at Downey Community Hospital. He was 78.

Canning served on the City Council from 1942 to 1956 and again from 1970 to 1974, and was mayor during the years 1950-52. He was also a charter member of the Southeast Mosquito Abatement District in 1954 and Gov. Ronald Reagan’s appointee in 1969 and again in 1972 to the state Department of Consumer Affairs’ Bureau of Employment Agencies. He was active in the Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis, Lions and Moose organizations.

Canning’s survivors include his wife of 52 years, Lois; his sons, R. G. Canning and C. Robert Canning, all of Downey, and four grandchildren.
