A Navy lieutenant was killed after ejecting from an F-14 fighter that crashed into the Pacific near San Diego, a Navy spokeswoman said. Killed was Lt. Mark Williamson, 33, a radar intercept officer from Logan, Utah. The pilot, Cmdr. Steven Carro of Summit, N.J., was in good condition. Both men ejected safely from the jet, Navy officials said. The plane was being ferried to Miramar Naval Air Station after routine maintenance at a rework facility on North Island. Navy divers witnessed the crash about two miles off Point Loma and responded, recovering Williamson’s body from the ocean floor. Officials said an attempt will be made to recover the plane, which sank in about 40 feet of water. The cause of the crash is being investigated.
