Toyota began producing cars at its Fremont plant.

The Japanese giant began regular production of the first U.S.-made Toyota at the Northern California plant that it shares with General Motors. The first of the speedy FX-16 subcompacts, painted white, actually was completed late Wednesday, said Tom Klipstine, a spokesman for New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., the joint venture between Toyota and GM that produces both the FX-16 and the Chevrolet Nova.
