A Chilean Marxist coalition’s call for a nationwide general strike to protest 13 years of military rule had little effect because the Christian Democrats, Chile’s main political opposition, refused to support it. Armored police vehicles sprayed tear gas and water jets to break up student demonstrations marking Sept. 4--Chile’s traditional election day before Gen. Augusto Pinochet seized power in a 1973 coup. Authorities said one man was shot to death by a military patrol, and police reported 100 arrests in cities throughout the nation.
