Driver in RTD Freeway Accident Gets Ticket
Shirley Jean Riojas, the 26-year-old trainee driver whose Southern California Rapid Transit District bus overturned on the Hollywood Freeway on July 31, was charged Friday with a traffic infraction--making an unsafe turn.
Mike Qualls, a spokesman for the Los Angeles city attorney’s office, said the fired driver is to appear in Traffic Court on Sept. 26 and could be fined up to $100.
The bus accident, in which 27 passengers were injured, occurred when Riojas, who had just a few hours behind the wheel, attempted too late to steer into a passenger loading turnout near the Vermont Avenue overpass.
