Police in India fired on thousands of rioters in Delhi’s old walled city and imposed a curfew in an effort to prevent clashes between Muslims and Hindus, the Press Trust of India news agency reported. It said Muslims took to the streets after a group of Hindus visiting a mosque reportedly failed to take off their shoes in accordance with Muslim practice. The rioters were fired on by police after about 3,000 people threw stones and set shops on fire. There were no reports of casualties in the shooting, but a policeman was reported injured by the stones.
