Unburdened by operatic tradition or cutesy cliches, Bergman treads a precarious line here between reality and fantasy, and ends up serving both with imagination and conviction. The music-making may tend to be competent rather than virtuosic, but the inherent style, wit and warmth make that irrelevant.
