An 18-year-old freshman at San Diego State University has told campus police she was raped early Saturday morning while returning from a party, university officials said. The woman told police she was returning from a party in a student apartment complex on the east side of the campus when she became separated from her companions, according to university spokeswoman Sue Raney.

The woman, who said she had been drinking at the party, said a young man claiming to be a student approached her, offering her an escort to her apartment on the other side of campus. The two had walked a short distance when the man raped her, Raney said. Immediately after the assault, the woman encountered a campus police officer who took her to the campus police station and then to Grossmont Hospital, where she was treated and released. Police searched the area but could not find the assailant.

The rape was the first reported on the campus since November, when a sorority member said she was raped by several members of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. It was the eighth rape reported on the campus since January, 1984.
