Gardena : Business Project Approved
The City Council unanimously approved zoning changes and preliminary plans for a 104,000-square-foot medical office and retail center on a 6.5-acre parcel along Artesia Boulevard just west of the Harbor Freeway.
A decision on similar requests from another developer seeking to build a shopping center on adjacent state-owned property was postponed until Dec. 9 because negotiations over the city’s purchase of the property from the state are continuing, City Manager Kenneth Landau said.
The project that has been initially approved includes a three-story medical office structure, a single-story retail center, a two-story restaurant and a community center and gymnasium that will be available for public use.
The developers are a group of South Bay physicians and businessmen who last November swapped for land, giving the city the Village Mobile Home Park. The city then resold the park to the tenants.
Kenneth M. Tokita, one of the developers, said the project at Artesia Boulevard and Normandie Avenue will cost about $7.5 million. He said construction should start in January, 1987, and be completed by the end of that year. City officials are expecting development along Artesia Boulevard to boost the city’s economy.
