A San Diego man who barricaded himself in an apartment in the 3500 block of Island Avenue near Logan Heights was shot and seriously wounded Wednesday morning following a shoot-out with members of San Diego Police Department’s SWAT team, a police spokesman said.

Arturo Villamar, 32, was listed in serious condition Wednesday night at UCSD Medical Center with gunshot wounds to his arms, legs and chest. SWAT team members shot Villamar during an exchange of gunfire through a locked bathroom door, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

Police arrived at 6:45 p.m. and found Villamar barricaded in the apartment, firing shots and throwing furniture through his window, Robinson said. Matilda Vivas, who lives in the apartment and is Villamar’s girlfriend, told police the man appeared calm at 4 a.m. when she left to take her child to her mother’s house, Robinson said.

After an hourlong standoff, the SWAT team arrived and attempted to talk to Villamar by telephone and bullhorn, but received no response. At 8:30 a.m., the SWAT team fired tear gas canisters and then entered the apartment. Villamar, who was locked in the bathroom, fired at the police through the door and the shoot-out lasted several minutes, Robinson said. Some witnesses reported hearing 50 shots fired during the exchange, Robinson said.
