Five Los Angeles Police Department officers were honored at the 27th Annual Medal of Valor Luncheon, sponsored by the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce. Police Chief Daryl F. Gates presented the medals to Mike E. Gurr and Ray W. Denton, who rescued citizens and saved property during the Baldwin Hills fire; Scott Browning and Walter L. Attlesey for shielding a family from sniper fire, and James P. McDonnell for evacuating 30 residents from a burning multiple-family dwelling. The Medal of Valor is the Police Department’s highest award for officers who extend themselves above and beyond the line of duty.
