Nine Sri Lankan Tamils are seeking refugee status in Canada after fleeing a Cubana Airlines flight at a refueling stop in Gander, a Canadian immigration spokesman said Friday.

The nine--a husband, wife, their five children and the wife’s two sisters--were on a flight from Brussels to Havana. The nine will likely be granted a permit to stay in Canada for one year while their case is studied, the spokesman said.

Last month, 155 Tamils were granted permits to live and work in Canada for a year after being found afloat in lifeboats off the Newfoundland coast.
