TWA Gets Final Approval to Buy Ozark Airlines
WASHINGTON — The Transportation Department gave final approval Friday to Trans World Airlines’ $250-million bid to acquire Ozark Airlines, creating the nation’s sixth-largest carrier, government officials announced.
The department approved an Aug. 7 finding by an administrative law judge that the sale does not substantially hinder competition in the airline industry.
The government ordered no labor protection measures when it approved TWA’s purchase of Ozark.
Both airlines have major operations in St. Louis.
In determining that the acquisition would not jeopardize competition, the department said that Southwest Airlines already served the St. Louis market and that the sale would not create a monopoly in the region.
The department also concluded that airport facilities will be available within a reasonable period to another carrier interested in establishing a hub in St. Louis.
