Pole Cites Threat of ‘an Ecological Catastrophe’
Poland faces “an ecological catastrophe” that will blight the entire Baltic region in 15 years if Warsaw does not receive Western help, a leading Polish environmentalist said Saturday.
“Polish governmental plans to combat aerial and water pollution are a step forward. But with Poland’s current economic problems, these measures will not be enough to save our environment,” said Zygmunt Fura, president of the Krakow branch of the Polish Ecological Club.
Poland has the worst environmental problems in the world and about 12 million Poles--one in every three--live in regions that are on the verge of ecological disaster, Polish scientists have said.
“In the next 15 years we will face an ecological catastrophe that will affect the entire Baltic region unless measures are taken to reduce significantly the pollution,” said Fura, a chemist.
