Share

Rescuers clawing through debris with their hands and clearing collapsed buildings with bulldozers freed 31 people buried alive by an earthquake in southern Greece. The official toll from the Saturday quake, which measured 6.3 on the Richter scale and was followed by 15 aftershocks, rose to 17; about 300 people were injured. Officials fear that scores of people are still trapped beneath the tons of rubble in Kalamata, a city of 80,000 about 100 miles southwest of Athens. They said at least 80% of the buildings in Kalamata and villages within a 100-mile radius sustained some form of structural damage.
