Texas Air Gets OK to Buy Eastern

Associated Press

The Transportation Department today approved Texas Air's acquisition of Eastern Airlines and said the companies' revised proposal clears up its earlier concerns about competitive problems in the heavily traveled Northeastern air corridor.

The $676-million merger will create the country's largest airline holding company. Texas Air already owns Continental Airlines and New York Air and has reached a tentative agreement to purchase People Express.
