Los Angeles Redistricting

Share

I’ve always been proud to be a native of Los Angeles. Considering its size and the associated problems, Los Angeles has seemed to be a city in which the people count. Residents show concern for what goes on around them and in the past they have been rewarded for their concern with a responsive city government.

Since the death of my father, Councilman Howard Finn, I have realized that the grief I feel is not only for him but also for the city he cared so much about.

The action by the City Council to rearrange the council districts appears to have been designed not with the needs or wishes of the constituents in mind, but rather in the interests of a few councilmen. Presenting their proposal at a time when District 1 has no vote, they leave District 1 impotent and jeopardize the democratic process in order to save their own seats.

Perhaps the councilmen involved have forgotten what their function is, to serve the people, not to be dictators using the people’s trust to meet their own political ends.
