A police officer and a 27-year-old woman were wounded in a shoot-out late Wednesday in the 900 block of Ballantyne Street, El Cajon police reported.
Sarah Butler was reported in fair condition at Sharp Memorial Hospital with gunshot wounds to both legs and the right arm.
Officer James Coddington, 39, a 15-year veteran of the force, was reported in good condition at Grossmont Hospital with pellet wounds to his face, hand and leg, police said.
According to a police spokesman, a witness saw Butler on foot carrying a shotgun about 11:30 p.m. and flagged down police. When Coddington approached Butler, she reportedly opened fire, wounding him. Coddington returned fire as back-up officers arrived on the scene. Police detectives said they have not established a motive for the shooting. An investigation of the incident is continuing.
