Baby Is Found in Bay; No Tie to Mexico Case

Share

Police are investigating the death of an infant girl whose body was found floating in San Diego Bay early Friday.

The victim has not been identified, but authorities said they have determined conclusively that she is not the 6-month-old Tijuana girl who has been missing for two weeks.

The parents of the missing girl fear that she may have been kidnaped by a baby-smuggling ring for sale to prospective adoptive parents in the United States.

The parents of the missing Tijuana child were shown a photograph of the body found here and said the victim was not their child, said Don Matticks, a coroner’s deputy. The footprints of the two children also did not match, Matticks said.

The FBI is investigating the reported kidnaping of Virginia Esther Angel Ventura of Tijuana, as are the Baja California State Judicial Police.

In the San Diego case, Matticks said a boy found the body about 7:30 a.m. Friday as it floated in the bay near the Grape Street pier. The dead child, in the water for less than a day, was clothed in a sweat shirt and sweat pants, Matticks said.

The child, described as a Latino of about 6 months old, was believed to have drowned. The body showed no signs of violent injury, authorities said.
