LaRouche Payment in Escrow in NBC Suit
Radical politician Lyndon H. LaRouche Jr. has turned over more than $250,000 to satisfy a judgment that NBC won against him in 1984, the network confirmed Friday.
Lawyers for NBC and LaRouche agreed Thursday that the money would be held in escrow by the federal court in Alexandria, Va., until next month, when the Supreme Court is scheduled to decide whether to consider an appeal by LaRouche.
Under the agreement, approved by U.S. District Judge Claude M. Hilton, if the high court refuses to hear the appeal, the money--a cashier’s check being held by the court clerk--will be given to NBC.
LaRouche, 64, a frequent presidential candidate, has said he has no money, that he lives at the homes of various friends and that organizations he does not control pay his expenses. The $250,000 was contributed by friends, a LaRouche spokesman said.
The judgment was granted in a counterclaim that NBC filed after LaRouche had sued the network, saying he had been libeled in a broadcast.
