The 34,000-member California Medical Assn.’s governing board, concluding that “Proposition 65, while well intentioned, is a bad law,” has come out against the initiative on the Nov. 4 ballot. The measure would impose stringent standards to control the discharge of toxic chemicals that could contaminate drinking water. Explaining the decision, made by the governing board at a meeting in Los Angeles, spokesman Charles McFadden said: “While (council members) recognize the urgency of dealing with abuses from toxic chemicals, they regard Proposition 65 as ill-conceived, and (it) could only delay progress in protecting the health of the public.” The medical association, which represents about half of the approximately 60,000 physicians in California, has been active in opposing Proposition 64, the Lyndon LaRouche-backed AIDS initiative on the ballot.
