Hawaii Lt. Gov. John Waihee held a commanding lead of nearly 15,000 votes over former U.S. Rep. Cecil L. Heftel with about half the ballots counted in the Democratic primary race for governor. Waihee had 47.3%, contrasted with 35.2% for Heftel, who resigned last month to campaign full time. The winner will face former state Sen. D. G. (Andy) Anderson, the GOP nominee. Incumbent Democratic Gov. George Ariyoshi is barred by state law from another consecutive term. Mufi Hannemann, a former Ariyoshi aide and former White House fellow, took a narrow early lead over state Sen. Neil Abercrombie in the Democratic primary race to succeed Heftel.
