7 Killed in Collapse of Subway Tunnel
MEXICO CITY — A subway tunnel under construction collapsed under the weight of a heavy crane, killing seven workers and injuring two, authorities said Saturday.
The official Notimex news agency reported that seven people died and two were seriously injured when a 100-ton dredging machine fell into the No. 9 line under construction.
Rescuers searched the collapsed tunnel for any other victims of the accident, which occurred late Friday about 45 feet below street level in the central Roma residential neighborhood, officials said.
“We do not know exactly how many people were on the crew but believe it was a 35-man crew,” an official said.
About 4.5 million people daily ride the 17-year-old subway system’s more than 72 miles of track. It is the least expensive in the world, with a fare of less than one-third of one U.S. cent.
