Transit District’s Funding Request Approved by County Commission

Share

The Orange County Transportation Commission on Monday approved the Orange County Transit District’s application for $5.5 million in state “guideway” funds for special ramps and other highway improvements.

Guideways are specialized ramps and roadbeds that channel high-occupancy vehicles like buses away from regular automobile traffic. The district plans to acquire a stretch of railroad track along the Santa Ana Freeway between the Orange and Costa Mesa freeways.

As part of a draft agreement with Caltrans for the funds, the OCTD would pay for design and construction costs. The $5.5-million request would cover only design costs.

Also Monday, commission members received an initial report on the feasibility of restriping the Orange Freeway to add more lanes, spokesman Tom Fortune said.

He said an in-depth staff report of the issue will be ready in about 30 days.
