The Los Angeles school board tentatively agreed to spend $1.8 million in district lottery revenues on several instructional and extracurricular programs, including the all-district band, the Academic Decathlon and a new reading and writing program. Formal approval is expected next week. Since last year, the district has received about $55 million from the lottery but had held off spending any of the money until last month, when it decided to allocate $12 million--about $20 per student--directly to the schools. District officials had hoped for but failed to win passage of legislation that would have allowed districts to use lottery funds to build schools.
