Clarification

We wish to correct the impression we gave to your reporter during an interview for the article (Sept. 7), “Metro Rail Funds Put on Temporary Hold by U.S. Judge.” In our excitement over the judge’s commendable decision, we apparently misled your reporter, who subsequently wrote that we “refused to discuss who was paying for the legal challenge.”

When I was interviewed, what I certainly meant to say was that there is no one source that is paying for our lawsuit against the federal government’s funding of construction of Metro Rail. The money raised and spent on legal fees has come from passing the hat to hundreds of generous citizens throughout Los Angeles.

We believe the majority of informed Angelenos support our cause--preventing the financial and environmental mistake that will result from constructing the Metro Rail subway/elevated train. We feel certain that a specific referendum among the voters will show that the people do not want the vast majority of our local half-cent transit sales tax, plus hundreds of millions of our federal tax dollars, spent on the Metro Rail boondoggle.
