The Environmental Protection Agency said it was banning use of the insecticide diazinon on golf courses and sod farms because it kills too many birds. The agency cited data linking diazinon to about 60 bird deaths involving 23 species in 18 states. Diazinon is used to control a variety of insects around commercial buildings, homes, nurseries and farms, as well as on golf courses and sod farms. The Interior Department’s Office of Endangered Species said that the Hawaiian goose and the Mohave tui chub could be put in jeopardy by continued use of the pesticide and that several other species could be hurt.
