The oldest gorilla in captivity--a 47-year-old primate named Carolyn--died Wednesday in the Bronx Zoo, officials said.

Carolyn apparently died in her sleep and was found when the central Bronx facility opened for the day, zoo spokeswoman Susie Arons said. Officials said the death leaves the Bronx Zoo with 12 surviving lowland gorillas.

Carolyn arrived at the Central Park Zoo in 1943 and lived there until 1982, when she was moved to the Bronx Zoo pending renovation at the Central Park facility.
