The U.S. War on Drugs
First, there was drug testing in the military. Then, there was drug testing in the workplace. Now, a presidential candidate proposes mandatory drug testing of all high school students. This would still be a hit-and-miss, uncoordinated program that would fail to test many persons.
How about a federal law that would require all persons in the United States to submit to a drug test each year? This could be done through government test centers located in post offices.
Enforcement would be easy: The police would establish roadblocks where persons who could not prove they had a drug test within the past 13 months would be tested on the spot.
The damage this would do to our right to privacy and our freedom from unreasonable searches would be no worse than what is happening now. After all, we should be eager to surrender our liberties for a good cause.
