Giants Beat Dodgers, 3-0; Sax Extends Streak

Mike Krukow and Scott Garrelts combined on a three-hitter, and rookie Mike Aldrete snapped a scoreless tie with a two-run triple in the eighth inning to give the San Francisco Giants a 3-0 win over the Dodgers Friday night.

Jose Uribe opened the eighth with an infield single off losing pitcher Tom Niedenfuer (6-6). Krukow (19-8) sacrificed, and Will Clark was walked intentionally.

After Robby Thompson fouled out, Aldrete hit a 400-foot triple off Franklin Stubbs’ glove in center field. Candy Maldonado followed with an RBI single.

Steve Sax’s one-out single off Krukow in the third inning extended his hitting streak to 24 games, longest in the National League this season, and it kept pace with the ongoing streak of Don Mattingly of the New York Yankees in the American League. Sax is hitting .327, nine points behind the NL leader, Tim Raines of Montreal.

Krukow gave up three hits, struck out eight and walked three in eight innings to become the first 19-game winner for the Giants since Ron Bryant won 24 in 1973. Garrelts pitched the ninth for his 10th save.

The Giants, who were no-hit by Mike Scott Thursday at Houston, snapped that string when Clark led off the first inning with a single.

The game was delayed 1 hour 51 minutes because of a steady drizzle that stopped the game after two innings. When play resumed, Balvino Galvez replaced Dodger starter Orel Hershiser and shut out the Giants into the eighth.
