Automated Trash Pickup Studied in Huntington Park

Share

The City Council has approved in concept a new system for residential trash pickup that would replace all trash containers with 105-gallon barrels.

The council is hoping that the change will help solve some of the city’s litter problems by eliminating various types of trash containers, especially paper bags whose contents often are strewn over sidewalks and lawns by animals.

The barrels have tightly fitting lids and would be picked up by trucks with automation. The city would bear the cost of placing the 4,400 barrels at each residence.

The automated system of trash collection “is just going to keep our city clean,” Mayor Pro Tem Tom Jackson said.

City staff will work out details of a contract with System Disposal Service and bring it back to the council for action Oct. 20.
