A Los Angeles garment manufacturer accused of illegally importing python skin clothing from South Africa was ordered by a Los Angeles Municipal Court commissioner to pay a $15,000 fine, the largest financial penalty ever levied in an endangered species case prosecuted by the city. City Atty. James K. Hahn said David Barr Inc. imported 24 shipments of women’s clothing worth more than $200,000 last year and displayed the garments at clothing designer shows before selling many of the items. After pleading no contest to three violations of the state’s Endangered Species Act, the corporation also was placed on three years’ summary probation.
