France’s Socialist Party, eager to boost its opposition profile, is asking voters in the south, especially in the Toulouse region, to rebuff the right-wing government of Premier Jacques Chirac in National Assembly by-elections today. The vote, coming six months after the coalition led by Chirac swept the Socialists from power in March, will be the first important test at the ballot box for Chirac and his uneasy political link with Socialist President Francois Mitterrand.
