A new mother who allegedly took drugs while she was pregnant was arrested on misdemeanor charges of contributing to her baby’s death. Pamela Rae Stewart, 27, was jailed for allegedly failing to provide medical treatment for her son, Thomas Travis Edward Monson, who was born brain-dead Nov. 23 and died New Year’s Day. Doctors had advised Stewart to stay off her feet during the last month of pregnancy and warned her “especially” not to use drugs after they diagnosed placenta previa, a condition which can complicate a pregnancy, police said. When an autopsy found amphetamines, or “speed,” in the baby’s system, a police spokeswoman said, a detective investigated.
